It is intended as an opportunity to think through making by being able to work for a while without many of the usual constraints and distractions. It is a collective space in which to undertake experiments, pursue new ideas and allow unexpected leaps of imagination.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I was provided with a large studio space and had access to workshops, technical support \u00a0and relished being part of a community of practice and working in a studio setting.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-963\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20046292_10155763158360649_8200621355981753522_n.jpg\" alt=\"20046292_10155763158360649_8200621355981753522_n\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20046292_10155763158360649_8200621355981753522_n.jpg 960w, http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20046292_10155763158360649_8200621355981753522_n-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20046292_10155763158360649_8200621355981753522_n-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Being in a physical space shifted the way I think about the work, writing and how I engaged with the material and has already had an impact upon the future direction of my research\/practice, it has led to the development of a new strand of Translation Zone(s) <em>Constellations<\/em>\u00a0(to denominate\u00a0the event-based, physical \u00a0manifestation\u00a0project) and can be seen in the materiality of the collaborative script\/work in progress\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/?page_id=937\">Escurrir<\/a>\u00a0that I presented at\u00a0Newcastle University.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the residency was \u2018Doing Deceleration\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8216;The imperative to \u2018do deceleration\u2019 is less a call to \u2018slow down\u2019, to withdraw or retreat from the process of production as such. Instead, the invitation is to explore ways in which we might disrupt or dislodge the pressure of acceleration: the ubiquitous demands to do more and more \u2013 faster and faster \u2013 that arguably underpin our contemporary culture of immediacy and urgency, of 24\/7 access and availability, with its privileging of multitasking, perpetual readiness and ethos of \u2018just-in-time\u2019 production.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The residency began with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nottinghamcontemporary.org\/event\/doing-deceleration\">symposium<\/a> at Nottingham Contemporary, which accompanied the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nottinghamcontemporary.org\/event\/exhausted-academies\"><em>Exhausted Academies<\/em><\/a> exhibition with presentations from Henk Slager, Emma Cocker, Mick Wilson, Adrian Heathfield, Finn Janning and Danica Maier.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-966\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/multiple-scans-.png\" alt=\"multiple scans\" width=\"1417\" height=\"904\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/multiple-scans-.png 1417w, http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/multiple-scans--300x191.png 300w, http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/multiple-scans--768x490.png 768w, http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/multiple-scans--1024x653.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/multiple-scans--1200x766.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1417px) 100vw, 1417px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the residency I played with different ways of presenting the physical material created during <em>Translation Zone(s): A Stuttering<\/em>, and explored ways to create a polylingual score that could serve as a model to work with future \u2013 which I soon realised was an impossible task.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-971\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/performance-drawing.jpg\" alt=\"performance drawing\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/performance-drawing.jpg 960w, http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/performance-drawing-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.heatherconnelly.co.uk\/translationzones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/performance-drawing-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I also attended a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nottinghamcontemporary.org\/event\/solfege-workshop\">Solfege workshop<\/a> run by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steffanijemison.com\/\">Steffani Jemison<\/a>, New York based sound artist at Nottingham Contemporary which \u2018introduced participants to the history and diverse applications of the solfege singing system and related systems of music notation.
