The text started from a\u00a0translation of the Riordan and Takayanagi\u2019s (1896:v) metaphoric description of the difficulty of translating Japanese literature, \u2018whose peculiar beauties are apt to disappear like the opal tints of a <strong>squeezed jellyfish\u2019<\/strong>, (Henitiuk 2014:144). Saldanha translated the English term, Jelly Fish, into Spanish and then back into English, which became [agua viva] \u2018Live Water\u2019 or [Medusa] \u2018 Medusa\u2019. We worked together discussing the merits of these subsequent metaphors and continued to expand the associations that they produced through the iterative translation and back-translation forming an elliptical \u2018feedback loop\u2019, that exploits the generative nature of translation and how the concept becomes expanded as it passes between languages.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><strong>Ref:<\/strong> Henitiuk, V., 2014. \u2018Squeezing the Jellyfish: Early Western Attempts to Characterise Translation from the Japanese\u2019 in St. Andre, J., (ed.) Manchester: St. Jerome Publishing<\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The process:<\/strong>\u00a0The work has been designed to evolve through constant editing and reworking and expand as each term is translated, back translated, and\u00a0discussed as we consider what\u00a0these &#8216;new&#8217; terms tell us about the process of translation. Following on from experiments made during her residency at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.summerlodge.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Summerlodge<\/a> (Nottingham Trent University , Connelly is \u00a0seeking ways to engage with the materiality of this\u00a0process, to record and expose what is\/has taken\u00a0place, and how new articulations for translation are\u00a0conjured up through\u00a0these subtle shifts of vocabulary.
